About Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a universal healing energy.  It’s not a religion and has no affiliation with any religion, sect or cult. Reiki is based on the universal laws of love and light for all living things.  The term ‘reiki’ is a Japanese word for two syllables which mean:

  • REI (pronounced ‘ray’) = Universal Spirit or essence
  • KI (pronounced ‘key’) = Life energry, light or Chi

Everything that is alive contains Ki (or Chi), but people who have completed Reiki courses are an open channel to the Universe’s limitless source of Ki.   This gives Reiki Therapists, Practitioners, Masters & Teachers unlimited access to the life force energy for their own healing, and they can transmit this energy to others.

A reiki practitioner is like a straw/pipe, they are able to tap into universal energy and transmit it to the receiver.  It is not their own energy that they pass on. It is also considered a type of hands on healing as many practitioners will place their hands gently on or near a person to transmit the energy to the client.

History of Reiki

One of the traditions of Reiki is the telling of the story of its rediscovery by Dr Mikao Usui.  We say “rediscovery” as it’s a universal healing energy that was understood by many of the great spiritual masters.

As Dr Usui’s story was an oral tradition in the early days, there are a few variations of it so the exact details don’t really matter but below is a snap shot:

  • Born in 1865, Mikao Usui was raised as a Samurai as befitting his family tradition.
  • Dr Usui lived in the city of Kyoto, Japan in the second half of the 19th Century.  It was a time of great change in the country and Dr Usui fully embraced Christianity and become a minister and teacher at a Christian college for boys in Kyoto.
  • After some time, he resigned his position at the college and set off to find out how one can connect to the universal life force. He travelled and studied extensively, learning to read Sanskrit and studying the teachings of Buddha and his form of healing, but nothing held the answers he was looking for. It’s believed he travelled extensively across America and Europe, studying history, medicine, Christianity, Buddhism, psychology and Taoism.
  • In 1922, he ended up in a zen monastery and undertook a 21day retreat of fasting & meditation.  On the last day he received the insight from a bright light that struck him in the centre of his forehead.
  • He spent his remaining years learning to put into practice what he had received.  He healed many beggars allowing them to embark on a positive life.  They got married and had jobs, but much to his surprise many returned to life as a beggar as they struggled with being responsible for their own lives.  Although discouraged it made him realise that Reiki is first about healing the self and being able to take responsibility for our own life.
  • He also started teaching others prior to his death in late 1920s.  One of his students, Chujiro Hayashi, was a physician and would go onto be Usui’s most prominent student.
  • Thanks to Chujiro,  Reiki slowly spread outside of Japan. In the late 1930s, Reiki found it’s way to Hawaii.  After WW2 it was carried to America and Europe.
How does Reiki work?

When your Reiki practitioner or therapist channels this healing energy to you, it activates your body’s natural ability to heal itself.  It’s not the practitioner doing the healing, it’s actually the recipient healing themselves. Reiki helps your body to stabilise and heal itself. The energy goes to where illnesses have their origin and works wherever it is most needed.  It works by releasing blocked energies, cleansing the body of toxins and working to create a state of balance in your whole being (mental, physical, emotional & spiritual).

I personally describe it as acupuncture but without the needles!  Both Reiki and acupuncture work by releasing blockages in our body to restore the flow of Chi.  This promotes a healthier and calmer state of being giving the body an opportunity to restore balance.

What does Reiki do?

When the energy (or Chi) in our body flows easily, then we are happy and healthy.  (It’s the same principle that acupuncture is built on.) But stress, lifestyle and other people can create  blockages in our Chi which prevents the energy moving through us. As a result we start to become unwell or feel a sense of dis-ease.  Left long enough our dis-ease manifests into disease. Reiki helps to remove those blocks and other low or negative energy.  Long term Reiki recipients use it as a preventative – to help clear the dis-ease in the early energetic stages before it takes hold in the physical body.

Reiki helps your body on all levels – physical, mental, emotional & spiritual.  Ultimately your own life path and openness to receive will determine what healing you receive.  Often a client comes to Reiki seeking a solution to a particular problem. But during the healing it becomes apparent that the issue is a surface level symptom of something else, and the healing will go to where it is most needed instead.   You will ALWAYS get the healing that is right for you in that moment.

What are the benefits of receiving Reiki?

Reiki helps to bring all parts of yourself back into alignment.  It clears the body of stress allowing the body to put its energy towards other things – such as healing itself.  Sometimes there may not be anything wrong as such – but just a feeling of unease or you just don’t feel your normal self and can’t put your finger onto the issue.

As a therapist, I have personally witnessed my clients experience the following as a result of Reiki:

  • clearer skin and whiter eyes
  • better sleep
  • improved ability to cope with work and life stress
  • greater sense of joy in life
  • improved self confidence & resilience
  • increased synchronicities and good luck
  • less fear, anxiety and depression
  • conceiving a child after infertility problems
  • reduction in physical pain
  • ending a repeating pattern of behaviour, health issue, etc.
  • weight loss (especially stubborn weight that doesn’t seem to respond to diet or exercise)

You can read more about my clients experiences on the blog under the Client Journeys category.

What can Reiki help with? Is Reiki good for anxiety, pain, fertility, depression?

Many people find Reiki healing sessions help with a variety of ailments including anxiety, pain, fertility & depression.  As mentioned earlier, Reiki activates your body’s ability to heal itself, and in my experience I have found that Reiki does help with all of these issues and many more. But it takes time and commitment to regular on going sessions (eg monthly).  The issue you may be experiencing is most likely a surface level symptom of a deeper issue at play.  A couple of reiki sessions typically provides relief in a matter of days, but with regular ongoing sessions you can start to tackle the root of the issue.

Reiki helps with many issues and is a perfect compliment to any other treatment you may be having.  The greatest shifts and healings come when a person commits to monthly reiki sessions.  Just like going to the gym or dieting, you get better results with long term consistency, so too with reiki.  This has been my own personal experience and what I have witnessed as a therapist over 15 years.   Intermittent sessions are great for putting out spot fires, but a more profound change & healing comes with regular sessions.  Ultimately it’s your choice – You can choose to put out the spot fires that pop up every so often, or you can find the arsonist that keeps lighting the fires with good steady detective work.

Although miracles relating to Reiki have been reported, it is not the norm.  World wide reiki is used:

  • in hospitals to support post surgery recovery and to help cancer patients rebuild their immune systems (reiki can increase the number of white bloods cells in the body)
  • by some defence forces to help service men & women recover from PTSD (reiki can release stored trauma in the body).

Please note:

  • Part of the healing journey will be your willingness to be open to receive, to be open to change, take accountability for your role in co-creating your reality and get to the bottom of the issue that caused the problem in the first place.
  • Healing isn’t necessarily all rainbows and unicorns. Yes you can have wonderful experiences, but when faced with an overwhelming high loving energy, your shadows and unresolved traumas can resurface because your body FINALLY feels safe to work on the issue.  We are so good as pushing away and ignoring parts of our life,  but the body remembers and crystalises the energy resulting in a blockage.  Reiki’s beautiful healing energy melts the blockage, releasing the energy stored…so its normal that the body sheds tears or old feelings arise to be seen and acknowledged.
How often should I get Reiki?

It really depends on what you hope to achieve!

As a basic rule, 4 sessions in 4 weeks is a great place to start.  This helps the body to shift into gear and works a bit like a detox.  After those 4 sessions, you should have an idea of how Reiki is working with you and have a ‘basecamp’ level from which to gauge your wellbeing going forward.

After those first 4 sessions, the frequency of healing is up to you.  This is because lifestyle, work & other people all impact us in different ways.  Some can go many months feeling great, while others still need weekly or monthly sessions.  And just like a detox,  it’s good to do the 4 weekly sessions once a year as a reset.  When I was working in IT full time, I found a Reiki session every 3 to 4 weeks was perfect.  It offered the reset I needed – as if I’d had a mini holiday!

Most people seek Reiki out only when things are ‘bad’ or incredibly stressful.  In that situation, Reiki can soothe the soul and bring clarity in the days after a session. But for deeper levels of change, as a tool for self development and stress prevention,  regular sessions are recommended.

NOTE: If you are experiencing a life or health crisis, I suggest weekly or fortnightly sessions to support you alongside traditional forms of medicine and therapy.

Receiving a Reiki treatment

What happens in an in-person Reiki session?

Every practitioner will have their own way of working, but typcially practitioners fall into 2 main categories – those who do not touch you at all during a session, and those that do.

A basic outline of an in-person session is as follows:

  • You lie down on a massage table (or be seated if you have a bad back).  You and your therapist remain fully clothed. You may be asked to remove your shoes, watch and jewellery.  Ideally you should wear relaxed clothing.
  • Some practitioners also offer blankets, aromatherapy and other elements to help you feel relaxed and pampered.
  • Your only job is to relax and be open to receive.
  • Your practitioner will start the session and over the course of the next 45-90 mins they will move every few minutes to a different part of your body.  Some practitioners will speak to you describing what they feel, others are silent waiting until the end of the session to discuss what they felt.  Some practitioners focus on the 7 main chakra points, while others also cover other parts of the body.
  • At the end you’ll be gently brought back, offered some water and have a small discussion about what came up for you and what your practitioner felt/saw.
What is distance/online/remote reiki and how does it work?

Distance Reiki is when you (the receiver) are not physically present in the same room as the Reiki Therapist who is sending you the healing.  Everything in life is energy, this means that everything contains Ki/Chi.  A Reiki Practitioner is able to focus on connecting with your Chi from anywhere in the world, and activate it to bring about a healing.  Quantum Physics is only just starting to prove (scientifically) how we are all connected.  They have discovered how a particle on one side of the planet, when stimulated, instantly stimulates a particle on the other side of the planet.  In much the same way, a Reiki Therapist can focus on your energy from any location and provide the same level of healing as if you were in person.

How a distance/remote session is conducted will vary by therapist.  Distance Sessions can be live online (eg via zoom) or over the phone.  Sessions that are completed offline are generally known as Remote Healing Sessions.  Offline sessions are a fantastic way to receive healing while you may be asleep or relaxing in your own way during the session.  The practitioner then emails or calls you to discuss what they found.

To make the most out of a distance or remote session, I recommend creating the right atmostphere for the occasion.   If meeting online, make sure you won’t be disturbed.  If the session is Remote/Offline, try to relax/meditate or sleep at the appointed time.  It’s not advisable to be at work or using machinery during a remote healing.

What to look for in a Reiki Therapist

Although it originally started with one man, there are now many forms of Reiki to pick from and this shows it’s versatility in working alongside other modalities or on it’s own.

All Reiki practitioners have learnt the same core components of the original Usui Reiki method, but because it is works well with other healing methods, there are now many other types of Reiki including Angel Reiki, Crystal Reiki, Shamanic Reiki, Tibetan Reiki, Celtic Reiki & Egyptian Reiki.

A Reiki Therapist or Practitioner must have completed at least Level 2 in their training before they can treat people outside of their family and friends and receive some form of payment in exchange.  Someone who has only completed Reiki Level 1 training can only treat friends and family and can not receive payment as they are in their initial stages of development.  A professional Reiki therapist will also have insurance.  As a prospective client/student, you are allowed to question the qualification and insurance status of a Reiki practitioner to make sure they are suitable.

How do I find a good Reiki Therapist?

Unfortunately the industry isn’t regulated, so it’s a case of trial and error.  If you have a bad or lack luster experience, it’s not because the Reiki Therapist isn’t good at what they do, rather they are not a match for you. What works for one person, may not work for you. And sometimes it can take a number of sessions before something kicks in.

I always encourage anyone interested in exploring reiki to try different therapists and go with the person they ‘click’ with.   If you connect well with your therapist I believe it delivers better results for you.  If your therapist makes you feel uncomfortable, guilty or ashamed about some aspect of your life or a behaviour – that is not the therapist for you.  You do not have to stay with that person.  Reiki is equally as effective via distance so you literally have a world full of practitioners to pick from.

Although each practitioner may have had the same basic training, each one has their own way of working.  Some will spend time talking to you about what concerns you that day, others don’t.  Some will be more tactile (ie place their hands on you) while others won’t touch you at all.  For some, Reiki is an add on service to something else they offer (eg massage), for others it is their only speciality.  If you are not sure, best to get in touch with your therapist and ask them how they work with their clients.  A good practitioner is more than happy to answer your questions.

Word of mouth is an excellent way to find a good therapist. But if you are the first of your circle to venture into this space, a chat with your local crystal shop or yoga studio owner or a google search can help you find who is local to you.  Make sure you see if they have any reviews as these can be valuable places of insight.

Other places to find a good practitioner are professional membership bodies.  A good practitioner will have insurance and belong to either a Reiki or  therapists association such as the International Institute for Complimentary Therapists.

Reiki Practitioner Red Flags

Good Reiki Pracitioners will belong to a professional body of some kind and abide by the Code of Ethics that is covered when learning.  But the industry isn’t regulated and so there have been cases I find worrying.

Red flags to look out for:

  • You are asked to remove your clothes – Reiki is performed when both the client and practitioner are fully clothed!
  • Medical claims – Reiki can support your recovery but is not a replacement for legitimate medical treatment. Anyone who claims they can cure serious illness or wants you to stop or change medical prescriptions/procedures is concerning.
  • Crossing boundaries – touching without consent or touching sensitive and private areas of your body.
  • Fear based language and conduct – claiming you are cursed or acting as a guru and only they have the answers you seek, or bad mouthing other practitioners and trying to prevent you from seeing other practitioners from any modality.
  • Financial pressure – no clear pricing structure or pushing long term packages and locking you into a contract.
What to expect during a Reiki session

Every session is different, and experiences can vary widely. You may experience nothing or you may have the most amazing spiritual experience.  The following are pretty common experiences:

  • nothing – just a very pleasant nap but a few days later you notice life/your outlook has improved.
  • a deeply relaxing experience sometimes accompanied by astral travel (ie you know you are not asleep, and yet you are also not in the room but have travelled to a very peaceful place).
  • seeing bright white light (or multi coloured light) despite having your eyes closed
  • dream like images coming to mind – some don’t make sense, others carry a lot of meaning.
  • tingling or flowing sensation through different parts of the body
  • muscle twitches, arms involuntarily lifting, water being released from the eyes.
  • muscles completely let go of tension and you feel incredibly heavy
  • your soul singing and being lifted allowing you to feel the pure joy & love of the universe
  • the heaviness in your body being taken away
  • messages from your spirit guides, ancestors, angels, etc
  • sensation of rewiring or restructuring to improve the body.

No one can say exactly what you will experience during a Reiki Healing – the only way to know it to give it a go.

What to expect after a Reiki session?

After your reiki session you may feel a little groggy or light headed.  Some people feel like a great burden has been lifted off their shoulders.  You may also feel the need to be on your own for a couple of hours.

As a Reiki Practitioner, I encourage my clients to:

  • drink plenty of water for the next 24hrs
  • avoid busy places for 6-12 hours
  • avoid drugs or alcohol for 24hrs.

You want to give your body a chance to integrate the healing without compromising it with other peoples energy or anything else that could undo the healing.

Some people experience only pure bliss in the days immediately after a session, with an increase in synchronicities.  For others they might feel tired or extra emotional for 24-48hrs after a session. This is normal especially when something big has been cleared becuase the body puts all it’s energy into recalibration for a day or so. For anyone who experiences these symptoms, I suggest sleeping if possible as it will help the body to integrate the healing faster.  Once the healing has worked its way through your body, you’ll notice a shift in how you feel.  You may experience greater mental clarity, renewed sense of joy for life, more energy, sleep better, etc.    More details are listed on the Energy Healing page.

Learning Reiki

Who can learn Reiki?

The good news is that ANYONE can learn Reiki!  You do not need to have any special abilities or skills.  The only thing you should have is atleast one session with a qualified practitioner.

Course Pre-requisites

As a teacher, and based on my own experience as a student and watching others,  I recommend receiving a number of sessions from a number of practitioners prior to learning it.

There’s 2 reasons for this:

  • to prepare your body energetically – you want your body to be used to the energy and know what it’s like to receive something before you give it out.
  • different practitioners work differently,  find someone who you click with and like their style as this is largely what you’ll also be taught.

What to look for in a Reiki Teacher

All Reiki teachers teach the core components of the original Usui Reiki method, but because it works well with other healing methods, there are now other types of Reiki such as Angel Reiki, Crystal Reiki, Shamanic Reiki, Tibetan Reiki, Celtic Reiki & Egyptian Reiki….and many more.

A good Reiki teacher will:

  • will be happy to answer any questions and concerns you have prior
  • be your on-going mentor for any questions long after the training is done. So you want to make sure you connect and get along with them.
  • be a member of a professional body and have insurance
  • provide Certificates of Completion which are recognised by professional bodies and insurers in the area/state/country that you live in.  This is important if you ever want to open your own practice or treat people who are not family members.

You should also understand how they deliver training (and does that suit your learning style) and what materials/manuals (if any) are provided to you.

My Certificates of Completion are recognised by the IICT so that you can get the right level of insurance as a small business owner.

How do I find a good Reiki Teacher?

Unfortunately the industry isn’t regulated, so it’s a case of trial and error.  I always encourage anyone interested in learning reiki to try different therapists and go with the person they ‘click’ with.  Not all Practitioners are Teachers so it’s important to seek out Reiki Teachers in particular. A good teacher will be available for a chat even just on the phone. I also recommend having am in-person session with them to check your energetic compatibility.

If you want your training to be recognised, in Australia at least, the course must be delivered live (either in-person or over zoom/video). A self-paced online, pre-recorded course is not recognised by professional bodies or insurance companies.

A good teacher will have insurance and belong to either a Reiki or therapists association such as the International Institute for Complimentary Therapists.

Reiki Teacher Red Flags

Good Reiki Teachers will belong to a professional body of some kind and abide by the Code of Ethics.

Red flags to look out for:

  • Compressed Timeline – teaching multiple levels in a weekend or over a few weeks.  The minimum timeline to learn Level 1 through to Level 3 is one year.  This allows for proper integration and students are able to safely learn to improve their energy muscles.  Think of it like weight training – sure in a moment of panic you could lift a car off a baby, but what long term damage would that do?  Instead if you are shown how to properly lift weights, and you gradually increase your capacity, you’ll be better off long term with less chance of injury.  After Level 1, there should be a 3 months before Level 2.  And 9-12months between Level 2 and 3.  As a student of reiki it’s important you practice, practice, practice during those months!
  • Financial pressure – no clear pricing structure.
What to expect during a Reiki course

Every Teacher is different but as a general rule, a class should run for a minimum of 8 hours (including breaks).  Some classes may run over a series of days or months.

Typically there is the same core components across all teachings: origins, the attunement (or activation) befiting each level (including any symbols) and information on how to give reiki to self and others.

But there’s no ‘standard’ course format.  Some teachers are from an oral tradition where students must take their own notes during class.  Others offer student manuals.  Some focus on theory and offer no practical experience, while others offer students theory AND an opportunity to practice in class.

Some provide all meals, others don’t.  Some teach at weekend retreats, some from home, some from their clinic, online….and so on!

That’s why it’s important to talk to your prospective teacher and find out how and what they teach. There’s a style for everyone.

What to expect after a Reiki course?

Learning Reiki is a deeply healing experience.

After completing a Reiki course, it is customary to undertake 21 days of self healing and eat a clean (ideally vegan) diet.  This will support your body during the 3 week integration period where you may experience mild flu-like symptoms as your body releases toxins and stored emotions that have been holding you back.

The self-healing is a daily practice that is taught in class.  Reiki is first and foremost a tool to bring yourself back into alignment and peace.  It’s just a bonus that you can support others too.

You’ll also come to find a new sense of wellbeing and peace within yourself and your psychic/intuitive abilities may expand.  As you begin to treat others, you’ll be able to witness the joy your clients feel when you are able to help restore their mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing.

Make no mistake – Reiki is a subtle but powerful energy that can literally change lives if the recipient is open to it.
